I hear this argument again and again, it's kind of an unwritten rule that it's right but I'd challenge it. We should stop providing excuses for these users. And stop enabling their bad habits, too! I hate it that Apache projects feel some sort of sadomasochistic need to support back to Java 1.3.x, e.g., it makes me grind my teeth at night. As for the solution of creating a 2.x branch, that's fine. I don't really see much difference between your solution and mine, given that you basically admit that not much work will be performed on it. Kill it outright, or let it bit rot, either way..
