Yes, upnp/dnla is not metadata tagging infrastructure, but a little bit more than that. Media Servers are required to parse videos, music and pictures metadata and provide this information to Media Clients.
From http://www.dlna.org/industry/why_dlna/key_components/media_mgmt/ ... ... UPnP AV specifications define the following four services hosted by Media Servers and Media Renderers. * Content Directory Service: This enumerates the available content (e.g., videos, music and pictures). ... ... From http://www.last100.com/2008/05/27/dlna-certified/ ... ... A number of Nokia’s N Series devices including its flagship N95 cell phone and N800 Internet tablet can act as a UPnP AV server (see this guide). Just imagine taking a photo or video on your mobile phone and instantly viewing it on the television via a PlayStation 3! ... ... Well, we always can buy Nokia if we want UPnP :-) Alex -----Original Message----- From: Lynch, Rusty Sent: Tuesday, August 05, 2008 17:02 To: Lopatin, Alexander L Cc: Jimmy Huang; dev Subject: RE: [Moblin Dev] Content Tagging/Searching on Moblin On Tue, 2008-08-05 at 14:43 -0700, Lopatin, Alexander L wrote: > Yes, it is overhead for development (or developers). A core capability for the new stack is having an extensive metadata tagging backend that will be used by all applications. We have a few possible options here, but it's looking more and more like Meta Tracker is the best horse to bet on for this race. (Tracker doesn't provide exactly what we need, but I haven't seen anything that makes me feel that it couldn't evolve into what we think we want.) Upnp/dnla is a lot of things, but it's not a metadata tagging infrastructure. --rusty
