Subject: RE: [Moblin Dev] Hello - Java Plan

PC in your pocket is what developers want, but is that what an OEM/Service
Provider's customers want? These are two completely separate markets. Obviously
the developer tools/SDK need to cater to the former, but if the final
environment was one that targeted developers, how many devices/copies of
software would sell?

The biz model of course depends on the entity that is going to face the
customers.

Yes, precisely... I think thats the dilemma for any open source coder with
half a biz brain... can they become the customer?
If the customer is going to be a network provider, and a coder cant get the
device from anyone else but the retail channel... why are coders going to join
and develop... possibly for fun, but I'm not sure if thats going to work...

If a coder knows that many markets are allowed... and that they can get a
device directly from intel or a device supplier... that would generate
entrepreneurial excitement.

But if this system is the basis of a nokia system... the real applications
are going to be flex, and controlled by the network... and the wholsale device
channel is closed... there is only one market and I think that then
Adobe/Intel/Nokia/Motorolla may as well just develop behind closed doors, open
source/closed biz model means nothing really.

Can 20 good coders get together... write code for these devices... and then
open a shop and sell their offering?
Will they be able to source the devices, will there be no lics on the linux
variation, will network operators allow it to sign on?.... from where I'm
sitting it doesnt look like it.... not intels fault I guess just the nature of
a closed market... but it does kind of kill an open source project.

Like insider trading on a stock market also kind of kills enthusiasm for an
investment... if you see what i mean.

Its a shame... and the real question I think is... is there a bigger free
market than the established closed market?
Would a free market be allowed to operate? I dont know... doesnt look like it?

Monopoly and open source... maybe it just mixes like oil and water ;)

Thanks... but hey I'll probably buy one when motorolla release it... if
someone doesnt release a pocket pc first ;)
