Yes, you're right. I wasn't thinking about the top panel which is a
closer analogy to the tray. OSX uses the dock for double-duty. Some
apps minimize and then notify. eg. Adium, the OSX pidgin, will bounce up
and down in the dock when it wants you to notice it.
That being said however, the reality is that a lot of third party apps
depend on a generic tray/dock/notification area of some sort. I know
that moblin is trying to provide a clean UI and consistent user
experience but not having a tray is pretty hostile to non-moblin apps.
Some people might prefer Pidgin for all its warts. You don't provide a
"moblinized" Skype yet. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples.
