I don't meet the crash issue you mentioned. Anyway, the keyboard layout info is documented in gconf /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/general/defaultGroup and /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/layouts. I think you can manually update the value by gconf-editor.
