I am very interested in the deb plugin.  I have been busy converting my  
large project to maven2.  I am currently trying to get the rpm  
packaging to work but will work on the .deb packaging when that is  
finished.   If you create a Jira issue and put your patches there I am  
more than happy to help you work on them when I finish with the rpm  
stuff I am doing.  If could be that the rpm plugin could be a good  
'guideline' the functioning of the deb plugin in the long term
