here's a patch for the work in progress.
I definitely struggled with modifying this mojo. it's just trying to do *so*
much and seems to have a bit of ADD and is *very* difficult to test right now.
It really needs to be refactored to be unit testable ASAP. A few suggestions
for the plugin. need to be able to unit test output without using files.
should use readers/writers to inspect content.
