I am opening this issue to track the status of support for maven 3
The plugin does not work with Maven 3 at the moment, I ran into this thread

Maven 3 has been released for some time, and it contains a number of fixes for
long standing bugs in maven 2, making it hard to move back to maven 2 for those
who upgraded to maven 3 to take advantage of features that didn't work before
as a result of those bugs
