@jieryn: Maven isn't that opinionated, especially on such religious issues!
But do I agree that to be truly "tidy" it makes more sense to reformat the spacing than to try and preserve it. But it needs to be configurable. If tidy-m-p had configuration for specifying:
A) reformat spacing yes or no?
A) if so, tabs or spaces?
B) if spaces, how many per indent level?
then I think that would be good enough for 99+% of scenarios.
Of course, there are lots of edge cases surrounding XML comments, custom indentation to line up certain things, etc. People may want leading indentation to be reformatted, except around such edges cases, which can get tricky.
So... the configuration stuff probably should be a separate ticket, eh?
