Sure, I understand that regenerating the POM from the Java object model is much simpler and more elegant. In that case, the configuration of "tabs or spaces" and "how many spaces" I mentioned above would be extremely doable. I think that tidy-m-p enforcing some consistent spacing like that is totally fine. As long as it doesn't enforce the "One True Spacing Of Maven (TM)". Configurability here will go a long way.
