The versions plugin itself has many feature to actually update properties in POM file so some pieces can be reused there easily. Attached is a candidate patch to implement this feature. It has several design issues that should be discussed and ITs should be added. When a version is specified in the dependencyManagement section of the project but not in the actual dependencies section (typically a POM that is used with scope import to inject a set of dependencies), the property could not be easily changed as we are looping over the properties to check if we have to change something against the remote POM. The patch provides also a candidate for that case that should probably be improved.
