How does it grow vertically? As a matter of fact and as a free comment, I personnally find the vertical writing to be more intuitive than the horizontal one. I could experience it when reading some Viet-Chinese traditional ideograms, some of which I can understand. BTW: did you know why western alphabet is HTL & LTR ? It's a story dating back from Roman times. At that time (a little BC) people were used to write HTL but were using both LTR and RTL. The majority was even using a very weird way of writing: the first line they could write LTR but the second line they used RTL, making the text almost continuous to read, and it seemed logical at that time. But since nobody could really pretend to decide for one and unified way of text layout the government or the emperor decided at some point to use HTL & LTR as the only way of writing. Best, Charles.
