Hello Sophie,

I received this mail that may be of interest for you too. It's about
an open source font licensing project. I've met those people several
times, last time this summer and I think that you could be of great
help for them too.
Before reading the mail, here is the link for a description of their
project :
http://www.sil.org/
I've not answered them yet, but will do through the week-end after
reviewing their licence (that take some time ;)
Don't hesitate to bring your feedback and thanks in advance :)

I've studied their licence and I think that there should be no major
problem.

I have studied it too, and I agree with you.

However it would be wise to check if the OFL can be
DFSG-compliant (for Debian and other derivatives). The
sales/redistribution close is morally acceptable of course but I've seen
a recent case of a licence that by prohibiting anybody to sell the
software was tagged as DFSG-non compliant (since it was depriving the
people from the freedom to sell).

I know that they have tried to be DFSG compliant, but I'm not an expert and I don't know enough about DFSG to be sure that their won't be any issues.

I can check it if you wish.

If you have some time, it would be great of course :)

Besides, I have to say that although I've never heard of the SIL, it
would be good to work more with this organization. What do you think?

They are willing to work more with us too and I think it's a really good thing. May be Gentium (see http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=gentium) could be a first step if they release it under OFL ?

I would like to have opinions from others, because I'm not really a "font user" (arial is the best in my life ;) or in need of special fonts like some languages could have.

Kind regards
Sophie
