I cannot speak for our Indian and Pakistanese friends, but this is what
I've heard: Indeed Urdu stems from Hindi but the two have evolved
differently and not just in their scripts; Urdu got influences from
languages other than Hindi (like Sindhi, Arabic, etc...) so the two are
much more different than two dialects...
