I agree with you there 100%. Open Source can be whatever someone wants it to be, if they're willing to put in the effort.
Yes, certainly. If you have a particular interest in an issue you will be more inclined to invest more of your personal time and resources in helping a user solve the problem.
But I think it is fine to help people solve their own problems with only advice and insights. We should all try to help people as much as possible, drawing a line where we don't want to get sucked in deeper.
