I have the same problems on Windows (of course) not on Linux though (using Subclipse or svn). on Windows, when I got into trouble I use the Tortoise browse option and rename directly on the repository.

I am running on a Mac (OSX 10.5.4)... but I guess it is an issue with the svn client I am using.
