I know that based on the information you've found that you seem to be a little 
sceptical that it was open to non Hotwax teams but I know that the invitation 
definitely was made, so this is not an attempt to mislead the community.

Looking through the mailing list archive I couldn't find anything so I suspect 
that it was done via the HipChat channel around the time that the league was 
started. 

It's up to you to decide what you think is the truth. If you believe me then 
that's fine and if you don't believe me, then that's fine too.
