Good to know you don't use log4j by default. It took me ages to figure out it was the default in beta2 when my debug tracing no longer worked. I actually think it (log4j) is the best logging option, especially for configuring the log file go into a relative path. We had lots of issues trying to use the "openjpa.Log" property in persistence.xml across unix and windows environments, so even though its was painful to discover log4j was the default, i actually ended up prefering it.
