I tried about

   * 1500 polygons
   * with a average of 10 points per polygons

on a single layer in Firefox 2.0 with XForms-Plugin.

In my development-enviroment(Intel DualCore 2,66 GHz, 2GB RAM) it took less then 6 secs to draw the layer,
even selecting the features by mouse events worked very fine.
Delivering the exampel to a customer-system (P4 1,7 GHz, 256 MB RAM) called me back to reality. It took more than 2 minutes to a a useful result, selecting feature responsed within 10 seconds.

My final solution was to remove the functionality from Openlayers into a GeoServer.
Not it is less than 5 sec on every system.

We made similar experiences in a different project where we had to draw about 200 polygons
in various color depending on a given state.

Thx Carsten

Dear users, dev,

Someone asked me today what the max number of coordinates could be
drawn for a geometry with the OL Vector Layer and I did not know how
to really answer. I asked cr5 and he gave me some off the cuff
estimates, which I have added to the FAQ here:

http://trac.openlayers.org/wiki/FrequentlyAskedQuestions#WhatisthemaximumnumberofCoordinatesFeaturesIcandrawwithaVectorlayer

Basically, he has suggested the following as upper bounds of reasonable use:

    * ~2500 Coordinates
    * ~100-200 Features (Since each geometry is rendered as a separate
DOM object, dragging and the like get seriously slowed down the more
features you have on the map.)

If you've been using the vector layers in different browsers or with
different limits... please let us know by either replying to this
email... or just going right in and directly ediitng the wiki itself.
The more input we have the better we know our own limits.

Thanks for anyone who can chime in
