All I can say is that we've had to branch for 1.6, 1.7 and 1.8-compliant
versions of modules.  Daniel Kayiwa has found a way to keep from having to
do this, but it's becoming increasingly difficult as we deprecate methods
and change db structure.  I think branching is a fine way of handling older
code.
