I believe this was by design, since authentication shouldn't be something
that can be easily overwritten.  We had mocked up AuthenticationScheme a
while ago to address issues of alternate authentication schemes (like
LDAP).  We could also add hooks as needed for folks that wanted to listen
to authentication events.
