What happened: the forum was never actually down, but it was receiving a number of requests that was thousands of times the ordinary rate; so only a small percentage was actually fulfilled, and others would see an error message.
Investigations showed that these requests originated from an out-of-control bot (not necessarily an evil one; this is often due to poorly engineered search engines spiders). Infra banned it immediately at a network level (we do manage the machine, but not network operations).
When the forum is consistently inaccessible, feel free to open http://infra.chat and place a short message there about it. Infra will take a look and it will normally act very fast.
