I use Visual Studio as a debug tool, and sometimes as an editor. I do my
builds in a Cygwin shell, following

instructions.
I edit using either gvim or Visual Studio depending on which is more
convenient.

Make try take out the contents of the ifeq ($(OS),WNT) section?
