I've always thought it odd, that the source code for OpenOffice is open,
yet the software needed to compile it is not, such that if one wanted to
modify core parts of the suite or even just wanted to compile it for the
heck of it, you'd have to spend a significant amount of money to do it.
Not being really into that part of the development I'm not fully
knowledgable, but I wonder why it wouldn't be better to have OpenOffice
developable with an environment like perhaps the Bloodshed C++ IDE.

And to answer your question regarding compiling on Windows:
You need a .NET2003 Visual C++ compiler. With everything else you're
on your own, but a lot of people would be gratefull if you get OOo
to build with a non-MS compiler. ;)
