set in the cygwin shell, you may be able to replicate those in your 4NT

Well, how about a quick look at <http://tools.openoffice.org/#Build>?
The environment is either set with winenv.bat (for 4nt) or winenv.set
(for tcsh/cygwin). No need for experimenting with "replicating" environment
variables. Besides, there are some subtle differences in some of the variables
so that you better don't try to guess what you have to change while
replicating.

the problem is that the W32-4nt OpenOffice.org build is only lightly
tested. Sun/Hamburg uses a completely different build system based on
4nt for their Windows builds but very few people (are there any?) build
OOo with 4nt due to the non-free nature of this shell.
I did some OOo build with the 4nt shell a while ago and it worked at that
time but I'm mainly concentrating on OOo 2.x right now and any 4nt base
build has a vanishing priority.
In any case I wouldn't try to build old versions, try OOo 1.1.5 and
report back if your problems persist.
