I just upgraded my X server from xorg 6.7 to xorg 7.0. While everything
else seems to work fine, the Times-New-Roman rendering with openoffice
seems to have degraded somewhat. I am using openoffice 2.0.2. The
following link is a screenshot comparing Times-New-Roman rendering using
openoffice 2.0.2 and 1.1.3 (on the same X server).

Other problems I have noticed are:
a) The font family "Symbol" shows up blank on the screen.
b) The greek symbols using "insert special characters" using Times New
Roman, while showing up on the screen does not render when export the
document to PDF.
Is there a way to fix this?
So far I have tried the following:
1) Downgrading the freetype library to 2.1.7 from 2.1.9. This didnt
improve or change anything.
2) I have also tried using export
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/fonts/libfreetype.so
(according to the suggestion in
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fonts_FAQ). However, this results in
failing to launch openoffice with the message:
ls: symbol lookup error:
/usr/xorg_7.1/lib/xorg/modules/fonts/libfreetype.so: undefined symbol:
