I have been looking into the problem of open office with Microsoft
office files and wasn't sure where to write this. It's coding related,
but I haven't done any code.
There are two major problems when converting / opening Microsoft word
files which causes the layout to be different, which is a major
annoyance for many people, especially when it changes the number of pages.
-----
The first is a rounding problem, Microsoft office rounds up percentages
calculations, where Open Office rounds down. An example,
I have an open office document which I exported as a Microsoft office
document. They should be the same, but the page count is different.
For the spacing between lines, OO is 11px, whereas MO is 12px.
Another occurrence of this in the same document is the spacing above and
below paragraphs, which for MO is 1px greater.
I assume, that when it calculates the line spacing in relating to the
text size, it produces a float which is then rounded differently for OO
or MO, though this explanation could be wrong.
-----
The second fault is after a table, the font formatting tags appear to go
wrong, and so in the OO document, the blank line after tables might be,
for example, font 10px, whereas the MO version will have been put the
the paragprah default, of 12px.
-----
I hope you could forward this information on to the appropriate section.
Thanks,
Owen
