I do not think a configure switch for enabling online update is on anyones task list yet.
Also I have to admit making this feature easily re-usable by others wasn't one of the primary design goals, mostly because other OOo vendors did already have their own update channel.
So unless you come up with a patch yourself to introduce a configure switch for enabling online update (which I would happily review), the easiest way for you is probably to go with the patch you already have.
