I think the idea is to present geographic information as text only, relative to your current position. It could be useful for blind people when combined with a speech synthesizer, or useful to compare map data with reality hands free while driving. I don't see much use for it as a text presentation because I can't imagine there are many devices out there that can connect to a GPS, but can't show a rudamentary map image.
