Can I suggest that an ID is maintained in a single tag to reference the original data that would allow it to be extracted from possibly another database.
I say this because I found the TIGER data wasn't entirely useless: a few months back I was able to process it to add is_in information to places and county and state info, all in our more conventional form, and which will allow searches to operate much more effectively in the future (when the namefinder eventually reloads it all).
