It already *is* broken. By the bug discussed in this thread. Even for debian the
current way of building breaks things:

But the "fix" suggested there seems to be a hack. This should be fixed in the
build system. Or in other words: "OSM2PGSQL_DATADIR" should contain the right
path while compiling. Most probably a simple fix. I just have to find the time
to look into this.
Most people prefer making a
package and installing that, over a direct "make install".
So do I. What I'm trying to do here is to write a build script for Slackware ;-)
