Just adding to this. PostGIS 1.3 and above support the ST_* prefix for
functions. Postgis 2.0 will be the first release to enforce it, but various
functions without the prefix, like AsBinary (vs ST_AsBinary) have been
deprecated so they don't have quite the same level of functionality.
Hence Mapnik moved to using ST_* throughout about a year ago:
