That is an important point. Developing a map style is not completely comparable to writing a software application. On the other hand with the end of osmarender there is no real comunity style sheet any more in development. Something less aimed at consistency or beauty, but rather a patch work of the ideas of dozens of crazy mappers ;-) It would be nice if we could have both: the official mapnik style with cartographic thought and reduced display of features and a branch which is more a laboratory of different ideas.
