Most of us are logged in to IRC when we are with a computer (and often even when we are not). But we are not constantly staring at the IRC window. Most IRC clients will notify you (with a beep or flashing window) when your nickname is mentioned. That way you can mostly ignore IRC, but if anyone wants to talk to you in real time all they need to do is mention your IRC nickname. -- Heikki Toivonen
