Key value metadata is initialized with {{std::make_shared<KeyValueMetadata>()}}
which returns a pointer to an empty instance of {{KeyValueMetadata}}. This
breaks Arrow's deserialization of metadata because it distinguishes between
{{nullptr}} and empty metadata.
