Thanks all for the prompt replies!

Since the 1.18.0 has been lagging for a while, I'd rather not extend the scope
at this point. Our docs suggest a 3 monthly release, but 1.17.0 was released in
December.

Kevin, thanks for flagging the compatibility fix. I agree that we should
include it in the release.

I agree it is time to bump to JDK17, but I don't see much value in adding it to
this version since it will just bump the lower bound.

For this release, I would also suggest keeping the current clunky release
process. Even after so many releases, it still takes effort to go through it,
so I'm very much looking forward to the automated version. With the amount of
shell involved, I would suprised if it would work on the first go :)

Instead, I think we should do a follow up release with 1.19.0 soon (1-2 month?)
with all that goodness and we can take the time to let it simmer a bit. If I'm
reading Russell's message correctly, he's happy to run the release and I'm
certainly happy to help :) In 1.19.0 we can then add Steve's hardening work,
Ismaël's peformance improvements and much more.

With everyone a great weekend!

Kind regards,
Fokko
