Improving PDFDebugger is part of GSoC2015 and this will only be done by the
student to be announced on April 27. (As it happens, [~kbashar] is one of the
two students; both students have asked for some smaller tasks here)
PDFReader is not nearing its end of life - this would be the case if there
would be a new product that displays files from the command line, but there
isn't and nobody is working on it, and there are no plans to. Could be
something for GSoC2016, but I think this would be too small, as we don't need
another Adobe Reader, we just need something to display the PDF Files to test
the rendering.
PDFReader doesn't have an API, it is just a command line tool. There is no need
to keep it painful to use.
