Do you have a pointer to the spec where this is explained, or is this just an
observation?
Your patch has a problem, there are missing parenthesis, see
https://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/nutsandbolts/operators.html
(Although I have some doubt about whether the part with CONTENTS is ever
accessed)
