I agree - it has to be for good reasons. I see two topics in making 1.7 as a
minimum requirement
# bugs in 1.6 which have been solved in 1.7 and are affecting PDFBox features
(which John is referring to)
# 1.7 features which may improve PDFBox (e.g. there was a comment in
PDFBOX-2871 about a potential speedup)
