I'll analyse your change to see if it is faster in my multithreaded test suite
of about 1000 PDF files. Your observation re type_custom is similar to one made
here a few weeks ago in PDFBOX-3768.
Did you use the {{-Dsun.java2d.cmm=sun.java2d.cmm.kcms.KcmsServiceProvider}}
setting? What PDFBox version are you using?
