Sorry, you are correct, I misread the diff. The blank check has been there
since the beginning (PDFBOX-4189 in 2018). So I have to guess why it is there.
Likely because this avoids running the blanks through every GSUB feature. The
code of that user was good and his idea on how to handle the GSUB replacements
was very smart, so I'd still prefer to keep it.
(off topic: I've always been wondering why we never heard from him after 2018.
After clicking on the original PR and on his icon and then on his LinkedIn
page, it turned out that he started a job as team leader at JPMorgan Chase in
2019)
