no, that was just so we could have the new version and old co-exist in the same place while the new was being developed.
Doesn't Apache2 subdir solve the problem? All other modules with the same name in 1.0 and 2.0 still have the same name.

If that's the only reason, I'd rather see it reverted to Apache::, people keep on referring to Apache::Registry when they mean ModPerl::Registry and it's very confusing.
