I like the MAJOR and MINOR as it mirrors a lot of other software out there particularly APR. This would be very useful to detect minor differences in APR/UTIL as we'll likely have mp2.0 run with a set of APR versions and mp2.2 a difference set.
Joe is right though, it does require more work on the developement part.
