Makes sense to add a config option instead of surfacing a SYNC/ASYNC keyword 
for UPDATE STATS. 

About initializing the thread pool and accessing the configuration object, I 
was thinking of doing it in 
MetadataEndPointImpl#startstart(CoprocessorEnvironment env) method.
