Given that vendors do indeed appear to be moving to HBase 0.98 (I wasn't aware of that until you mentioned it, but looking into it further appears to confirm it), this has become less important for me, so I'm ok with sticking with HBase 0.98.x compatibility based on the assumption that there will be upcoming vendor releases that support it.
