You may want to track MAPREDUCE-5663. That should, eventually, allow splits to
be generated in the AM - with the fallback of generating splits on the client
if the specific Input/OuptutFormat does not implement the interface.
Does PIG use it's own implementation of Input/OutputFormat which wraps around
underlying formats ?
