Yes, the sliding menu is possible (and pretty easy to do). We do something similar with Sheets.
Also keep in mind that all containers are "layered", so to speak. Each container has an individual z-order that dictates the order in which sub-components are painted. So you don't necessarily need a dedicated container type to achieve what you describe.
