Note that your code needs to change slightly:
Bounds bounds = logTextArea.getCharacterBounds(textarea.getCharacterCount());
textarea.scrollAreaToVisible(bounds);
Note the absence of the "-1" factor, since we actually want the position of the
piece just past the end.
