It should be possible to do so. I had a look and the main difference should be 
Adressing and using only a subset of the modbus functions.
I would probably still recommend a different driver module as this makes it 
easier for inexperienced users to use (would be pretty much the modbus s 
driver, but wie other defaults, removed tcp support and reduced functions (I 
think the original modbus uses function codes jbus does not support)


If you want to implement this, it's be happy to mentor you for free, but you 
would be doing the work.

Perhaps someone here is willing to take on the tasks, that's also great.

I would be willing to work on this for a donation of let's say 600€ (if you're 
generally Interested I can setup a campaign on open collective.... There you 
could motivate others to donate and hereby share the costs)
