Hi Nacho, And welcome to plc4x.
As Lukas mentioned, yes the Profinet work was backed by a company that financed the work on it. Unfortunately the Profinet protocol was a pretty tough beast and the previous core of plc4x (SPI2) didn't support finalizing it. NLnet funded a complete rewrite of that (SPI3) that removed these blockers. I put a lot of hard work into getting it working by investing a lot in hardware and software and several weeks of development. Unfortunately, the social contract of open-source is not accepted by the automation industry. Where people developing stuff like this can make a living from that work. So I switched modes: now everything I do generally goes into my commercial offering at ToddySoft. Depending on the level of support I'm getting, I push some parts back to plc4x. In case of profinet there was no real support. I have a working Profinet driver in my commercial offering, if that's interesting for you. We’re always excited to hear about new IoT projects where PLC4X might play a role. **Regarding the current state of Profinet:** As you’ve noticed, Profinet support in PLC4X is still under development. Currently, there is no official, stable release ready for production use. Progress depends heavily on community contributions and available resources, which is typical for open-source projects. **Your options for official Profinet support:** Since PLC4X is a pure open-source project, there are two ways to accelerate or obtain official support for Profinet: 1. **Engage external developers:** You could hire a company or developer (such as ToddySoft https://www.toddysoft.com/ ) specializing in PLC4X to advance or customize the Profinet implementation for your project. Indirect support https://opencollective.com/friends-of-toddy (as you may see official support exists but not for free as open source does not mean free cost but open source for everyone to use) 2. **Contribute to the project:** If your team or client has developer resources, contributing directly to the project is a great way to support its development while benefiting from the community. Any code contributed to the project helps not just you, but all users. **Alternatives:** If Profinet isn’t immediately available, you might consider other protocols like **Modbus TCP** or **OPC UA**, both of which are supported by PLC4X and widely used in industrial settings. Since you prefer Kafka as a broker, PLC4X fits seamlessly into that ecosystem. f you have specific questions about implementation or potential workarounds, we’re also happy to discuss those.
